The sentence “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” is in Hindi which means “Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child” in English. For those who understand English, the objective of this scheme might be clear to them. This scheme is basically a pan India campaign and under this campaign, various small schemes are launched. Under this campaign and its schemes government of India is trying to create awareness for the welfare of girls in India.

For the past couple of decades, the sex ratio in India is continuously declining. In the year 2001, this ratio in India was 927 girls per 1,000 boys whereas in the year 2011 it dropped down to 918 girls for every 1,000 boys. At some particular places in the country, the situation was even worse. This is really an alarming situation and the right time to start a campaign like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP).

The BBBP scheme was launched on 22 January 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This scheme is jointly run by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Women and Child Development, and the Ministry of Education. Through this scheme, authorities implement actions in multiple sectors for the welfare of girls. Initially, Shakshi Malik, the bronze medalist in Olympics 2016 was made the brand ambassador of this scheme.

Objectives of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme

Schemes Launched Under the BBBP

1. Ladli Laxmi Yojana

The Ladli Laxmi Yojana is launched by the government of Madhya Pradesh with objectives similar to BBBP. Under this scheme, the Madhya Pradesh government provides some financial assistance to the girls in the state. This scheme mainly focuses on educating girls. After applying for this scheme if the girl is not married before the age of 18 then she receives nearly 1 Lakh rupees after turning 21. Apart from that government also provides a fixed amount of money every time when the girl is promoted to the higher class. For example, if the girl is promoted to 6th standard then she receives Rs.2,000/-.

2. Sukanya Samridhi Yojana

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a small deposit scheme under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme. This scheme is to encourage the parents or guardians of the girl child to open a savings bank account in her name. This bank account can be open in all the major banks of the country. Parents or guardians can deposit a minimum of Rs. 250. in the Sukanya Samriddhi Account. Whereas the maximum deposit limit under this scheme is Rs. 1,50,000. The family of a girl child can open an account under this scheme before the girl turns 10. Currently, the interest rate under this scheme is 7.6%.

3. Dhanalakshmi scheme

Dhanalakshmi Scheme is also a girl child welfare scheme launched by the government of India. Under this scheme, the government provides insurance and education incentives to girls. The government provides initial cash of Rs. 5000 to the girls registered under this scheme and born after November 8, 2008. However, the government has now introduced some better and more attractive schemes than this one.
